Founded in 1398, this storied institution was reorganized as a modern school in 1895 and introduced as a college in 1946. Seoul, an ancient city that has existed for more than two thousand years, is home to the university's main campus. The campus sits within the original city walls that marked the boundaries of the old capital during the Joseon Dynasty. The university campus is directly across from Changdeokgung, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea's best-preserved royal palaces. As the school expanded its offerings across different programs over time, some faculties relocated to Suwon.
Both campuses of Sungkyunkwan University are designed to meet student needs. Modern classrooms, workshops and laboratories, computer and gaming rooms, gyms, shopping centers, cafes, and restaurants are all available for students across the university's campuses.
Sungkyunkwan University provides housing for its students in on-campus accommodations, also known as SKKU dormitories. The Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul has a total of 10 dormitory buildings. The Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon has 5 dormitory buildings. Dormitory entrances are secured with automatic RFID-key doors that allow only students with legal access to enter. Students in the dormitories can participate in activities such as pizza parties, outdoor trips, painting competitions, and yoga classes.
There is 1 school cafeteria and 5 restaurants on the university campuses. Students can socialize with other students while having breakfast, lunch, and dinner there. Food is prepared with fresh, daily ingredients.
