The University of Hong Kong overview

The University of Hong Kong is the oldest university in Hong Kong, and it continues the Hong Kong College of Medicine, founded in 1887. The foundation of the present university was laid in 1910, and it now teaches across 10 faculties. HKU is a public research university, and it was the first university the British established in East Asia. The QS World Rankings place it 21st internationally and 3rd in Asia. Its distinguished academics and scientists were the first team to isolate the coronavirus successfully.

In 2016 the university received more than 40,000 applications, and more than 16,000 of them came from students outside the Hong Kong education system. English is the medium of instruction. Application Process

How to get into The University of Hong Kong

If you want to apply to an undergraduate program at the University of Hong Kong, you must meet the following admission requirements:

  • Completion of 12 years of primary and secondary education
  • A diploma with a strong GPA
  • An International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, or
  • A GCE A Level diploma
  • An English proficiency certificate from an internationally recognized exam such as TOEFL or IELTS
  • Official transcripts showing the courses you took and the grades you earned in high school
  • Application fee is HK$450.

If you want to apply to a graduate program at the University of Hong Kong, you must meet the following admission requirements.

  • A 4-year bachelor's degree diploma
  • A strong GPA
  • An English proficiency certificate from an internationally recognized exam such as TOEFL or IELTS
  • Official transcripts showing the courses you took and the grades you earned throughout your education
  • A GRE/GMAT score may be required to meet the admission requirements.
  • Application fee is HK$450.

HKU SPACE offers General English, Business English, and English courses for professions and departments. These run from 30 to 90 hours and cover a wide range of levels.

Take a closer look at The University of Hong Kong

The main campus stands on a 177,000-square-meter site along Pokfulam Road and Bonham Road, in the Pokfulam area of Hong Kong Island. The university also has several buildings at Sandy Bay Gap. Its main building is the oldest structure on campus, and Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody sponsored it. The architects Messrs Leigh & Orange designed it.

Campus Life

The campus buildings and faculties show Chinese architecture. The university teaches you in modern classrooms and in well-equipped laboratories and workshops. Two officially recognized student organizations give you the chance to join extracurricular activities: the HKU Students' Union (HKUSU) and the Postgraduate Students' Association (PGSA).

Cafes and restaurants on campus serve daily meals made from fresh ingredients and suited to students' tastes. You can eat three meals a day here and spend time with friends. At convenient spots across the campus you will find many restaurants and cafes. They serve local flavors, varied cuisines, Western food, halal options, coffee, pastries, and healthy vegetarian meals. Prices are affordable, so you can dine with friends.

The campus also has dormitory buildings with a range of room options, plus computer labs similar to internet cafes. You will also find a bookstore, gyms, athletic facilities, a health center, and a language learning center. The library holds thousands of important academic publications.
