The University of Hong Kong, the oldest university in Hong Kong, is a continuation of the Hong Kong College of Medicine, which was founded in 1887. The foundation of the current university was laid in 1910, and today it offers instruction across 10 faculties. A public research university, HKU was the first university established by the British in East Asia. Ranked 21st internationally and 3rd in Asia according to the QS World Rankings, its distinguished faculty and scientists were the first team to successfully isolate the coronavirus.
The University of Hong Kong provides a broad and comprehensive educational experience. In 2016, the university received more than 40,000 applications, of which more than 16,000 came from students outside the Hong Kong education system. With English as its medium of instruction, HKU today provides a high-quality university education to nearly 30,000 students through both domestic and international research.
The university is a founding member of Universitas 21, an international consortium of research-focused universities. HKU has reached international standing through its achievements as a broad, research-oriented institution.

Submitting at least one of the exams below with the required score is a prerequisite for application. The score threshold may vary by program.
How to get into The University of Hong Kong
Prospective students wishing to apply to undergraduate programs offered by the University of Hong Kong are required to meet the following admission requirements:
- Completion of 12 years of primary and secondary education
- Diploma with a strong GPA
- International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, or
- GCE A Level diploma
- English proficiency certificate obtained through internationally recognized exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
- Official transcripts showing the courses taken and grades earned during the applicant's high school education
- Application fee is HK$450.
Prospective students wishing to apply to graduate programs offered by the University of Hong Kong are required to meet the following admission requirements.
- 4-year bachelor's degree diploma
- Strong GPA
- English proficiency certificate obtained through internationally recognized exams such as TOEFL or IELTS
- Official transcripts showing the courses taken and grades earned throughout the applicant's education
- A GRE/GMAT score may be required to meet admission requirements.
- Application fee is HK$450.
HKU SPACE offers General English, Business English, and English for professions and departments courses. These range from 30 to 90 hours and cover a wide range of levels.
A student visa is required to study in Hong Kong.

The university's main campus is located on a 177,000-square-meter site along Pokfulam Road and Bonham Road in the Pokfulam area of Hong Kong Island. The university also has several buildings at Sandy Bay Gap. The university's main building is the oldest structure on campus and was sponsored by Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody. It was also designed by the architect Messrs Leigh & Orange.
