Masaryk University (MU) began in 1919 in Brno, Czech Republic, and is today the country's second-largest university and one of its most prestigious. It carries the name of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. The university was set up to promote academic freedom, democratic values, and scientific research, and it served as an alternative to Charles University in Prague. MU opened with four faculties — Law, Medicine, Science, and Arts.
The university faced significant challenges, including the Nazi occupation during World War II, when it was forcibly closed, and the communist regime, which imposed ideological restrictions on academic work. Despite these hardships, Masaryk University survived and expanded, becoming a major force in Czech higher education and research. Today the university has ten faculties, with programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, law, economics, and information technology.
It is also home to CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology), a major interdisciplinary research center. CEITEC specializes in life sciences, nanotechnology, and advanced materials, and it draws leading scientists from around the world. MU is a pioneer in digital education as well. It was among the first universities in Central Europe to implement a fully electronic student administration system, which improved accessibility and efficiency.

The main, historic campus sits in the city center of Brno and houses faculties such as Law, Arts, and Social Sciences. The same area holds the Masaryk University Library, one of the largest academic libraries in the country.
