Palacky University Olomouc
Palacky University Olomouc overview
Palacký University Olomouc (Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci) is the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic. It is also one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Central Europe. The Jesuits founded it in 1573 as a center for theological study, and the university soon widened its teaching to philosophy, law, and medicine as well. Through the 17th century the university helped shape Moravian and Czech intellectual life, and became an important center of education and research.
In 1850, however, the Austrian authorities downgraded it to secondary-school level, which sharply reduced its influence. Full university status did not return until 1946, when the school was named after František Palacký, the prominent Czech historian and statesman. Since then it has grown into a modern institution with eight faculties. Those faculties offer a wide range of programs in the humanities, natural sciences, medicine, law, education, and theology. Throughout its history the university has stood at the forefront of scientific and cultural progress.
It played an important role in the Czech National Revival, promoting the development of the Czech language, literature, and national identity. During the communist era the university faced ideological restrictions, as many academic institutions did. Even so, it remained a center of intellectual dissent and reform. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989 it embraced academic freedom and international collaboration, and greatly expanded its research output and global partnerships.
Today the university is known for advanced research in science and medicine, particularly in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and environmental studies.
