Originally known as Victoria College, Victoria University of Wellington was founded in 1897 during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Research at the university began in 1899 with the arrival of four pioneering professors: Thomas Easterfield, Hugh Mackenzie, Richard Maclaurin, and John Rankine Brown. Victoria University of Wellington is one of New Zealand's oldest and most prestigious institutions, with a proud tradition of academic excellence.

How to get into Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University offers preparatory programs called "Foundation Studies" and "English for Academic Purposes" to help students entering higher education for the first time develop university readiness and language proficiency.

In addition, international prospective students seeking undergraduate study at Victoria University of Wellington must meet the following criteria:

  • High GPA high school diploma, or
  • Successful completion of secondary education and one year of undergraduate study at a recognized higher education institution, or
  • Successful completion of the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Program or another recognized preparatory program, or
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Language proficiency documentation
  • SAT/ACT score may be required depending on the department.

Take a closer look at Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University operates across three campuses in Wellington — Kelburn Campus, Pipitea Campus, and Te Aro Campus — as well as facilities in Auckland. The Kelburn Campus, located in central Wellington, is the university's main campus and houses the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Health, and the Faculty of Science. The Pipitea Campus is home to the Faculty of Business and Government and the Faculty of Law, while the Te Aro Campus houses the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation.

At the university's Auckland facilities, postgraduate programs in Architecture, Business Analysis, Management and Leadership, and User Experience Design are delivered.

Campus Life

Across the university's Kelburn, Pipitea, and Te Aro campuses, the library buildings provide students with spacious study areas, while the university's sports facilities and sports clubs give students the opportunity to participate in activities across a wide range of sports. The many student clubs and societies active within the university bring together enthusiasts from a wide variety of interests, and the student union organizes events throughout the year.

Located at various points in central Wellington, the university's campuses are intertwined with the social and cultural offerings of the city itself. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, the Wellington Cable Car, Wellington Botanic Garden, Oriental Bay, and the famous Cuba Street are among the must-visit spots in Wellington.
