The oldest of Scotland's four ancient universities and the third oldest university in the English-speaking world after Oxford and Cambridge, the University of St Andrews was established together with the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen as part of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century.

The departments and buildings of the University of St Andrews, spread throughout the town of St Andrews, are generally concentrated in the areas of 'North Street', 'South Street', 'The Scores', and 'North Haugh', and the university has two campuses within the town: 'United College' and 'St Mary's College'.
The University of St Andrews Library, constructed in 1612 by King James VI and home to more than one million volumes and over two hundred thousand rare and antique books, houses one of the most comprehensive university library collections in the United Kingdom.
The main building of the University Library is located in the 'North Street' area. In addition, the university includes numerous publicly accessible museums and galleries, such as the University of St Andrews Museum and the Bell Pettigrew Museum.
The University of St Andrews has one of the student populations that benefits most from university-provided accommodation among universities in Scotland, and there are 18 different buildings designated for student housing.
The University of St Andrews plans to become the UK's first carbon-neutral university through investments and funding connected to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI).
