Rather than a traditional campus university, the University of Barcelona has always been an urban university, and with its main city-center campus and other affiliated locations, it is spread throughout the city of Barcelona. The university also has facilities in Santa Coloma, Badalona, l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Sant Joan Despí, and considers the city of Barcelona itself to be its campus. Barcelona's extensive public transportation network has made it possible to establish a sustainable mobility model for getting around both between university buildings and across the city.

At the same time, a large portion of Barcelona's residents also choose to cycle for urban transportation.

As the most important public university in Catalonia and an institution of excellence in higher education and research, the University of Barcelona is recognized as a cosmopolitan urban university. With all its buildings and facilities spread throughout the city of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona offers students a network of sixteen faculties and nine research centers that continuously contribute to the creation, transmission, and dissemination of knowledge, along with a wide range of services including housing, sports complexes, libraries, student communities, social activities, and advisory services.
