Lund University has its main campus in the city of Lund, Sweden. It also has satellite campuses in other cities, each focused on specific academic disciplines.
The Lund campus is the heart of the university, and it hosts most of the eight faculties. Historic buildings there include the University Main Building, Lund Cathedral, and AF Borgen, a student union center dating back to 1851.
The Lund campus is known for its blend of historic charm and modern facilities. These include IDEON Science Park, Sweden’s first research park, which fosters innovation and collaboration among students, researchers, and industry.
MAX IV Laboratory is a world-class synchrotron radiation research facility. Together with the soon-to-open European Spallation Source (ESS), it further cements Lund University’s position as a global leader in advanced scientific research.
The main campus also houses the University Library, one of Sweden’s largest and oldest libraries, with more than 12 million items.
Beyond Lund, the university has additional campuses in Helsingborg, Malmö, and Ljungbyhed, each focused on specialized areas. The Helsingborg campus lies about 50 km from Lund and serves more than 4,000 students. It offers programs in strategic communication, service management, and engineering.
The Malmö campus is home to the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts. There students study music, theater, and fine arts in a dynamic and creative environment. In Ljungbyhed, Lund University works with the Swedish aviation industry to offer programs in aviation science and flight training.
At the center of student activities are 13 student nations — social and cultural organizations with roots dating back to the 17th century. Each nation represents a different region of Sweden. Together they give students a sense of community through bars, concerts, sporting events, and themed parties.
These nations also offer affordable student housing, scholarships, and job opportunities. The Academic Association (Akademiska Föreningen, AF) is another important institution. It hosts major cultural events, debates, and performances in its historic student building, AF Borgen.
Lund University also has a strong international presence. Student organizations such as the Lund University Student Union (LUS) and ESN Lund (Erasmus Student Network) ensure that exchange and international students become fully integrated into university life.
The university is also renowned for its traditions and large-scale student events, which draw participants from across Sweden and beyond. One of the most significant is the Walpurgis Night (Valborg) celebration on April 30. Thousands of students gather in Stadsparken, the city park, to welcome spring with picnics and live performances.
Another iconic event is the Lund Carnival (Lundakarnevalen), held every four years since 1849. Students organize it entirely themselves, with elaborate parades, satirical shows, and music festivals.
Sports and outdoor activities are also an important part of student life. Lund Sporthall and other university facilities offer a wide range of activities, from soccer, floorball, and tennis to skiing trips and rowing regattas.
