Universiteit Antwerpen overview

The University of Antwerp is a public university established in 2003 in the city of Antwerp, in the Flanders region of Belgium. Although its official founding year is 2003, the institution's roots can be traced back to the Sint-Ignatius College of Commerce, founded in Antwerp in 1852. As one of the first higher education institutions in Europe to award official university degrees in trade and business, the college expanded its academic offerings in subsequent years by opening a Faculty of Literature, Law, and Philosophy and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, and was elevated to university status in the 1960s. The institution served as part of a confederation of higher education institutions formed by three different schools from the 1970s through the 2000s, and took on its current form as the University of Antwerp in 2003 when all these institutions were merged. Operating across 6 different campuses in the city of Antwerp, the university currently provides higher education opportunities to more than 21,000 students.
