Universiteit Antwerpen overview
The University of Antwerp is a public university established in 2003 in the city of Antwerp, in the Flanders region of Belgium. Its official founding year is 2003, but its roots go back further. The Sint-Ignatius College of Commerce was founded in Antwerp in 1852. It was one of the first higher education institutions in Europe to award official university degrees in trade and business. In later years the college added a Faculty of Literature, Law, and Philosophy and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. It was raised to university status in the 1960s.
From the 1970s through the 2000s, the institution was part of a confederation of higher education institutions formed by three different schools. In 2003 all of these institutions merged, and the university took its present form as the University of Antwerp. It operates across 6 campuses in the city of Antwerp and today offers higher education to more than 21,000 students.
