Master's & Postgraduate Study in Canada

A master's degree in Canada can deepen your expertise, open career doors, and — in many countries — include post-study work rights. Use this guide to plan a competitive postgraduate application.

  • Entry requirements. Programs in Canada typically expect a relevant bachelor's degree, a solid GPA, proof of English, and — for business or quantitative fields — GRE or GMAT scores. Some also require work experience.
  • Funding & scholarships. Look into university scholarships, government schemes, and assistantships. Funding is competitive, so apply early and prepare a strong statement of purpose.
  • Deadlines & careers. Note application windows and any post-study work visa options, which can be a key factor when choosing a program and city.

Dream Uni supports your master's application in Canada — from choosing programs and funding to essays, references, and visas.

Visa process

Canada Student Visa: Step by Step

Application Steps

  1. Admission from a DLI-Approved UniversityIn Canada, only an admission from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) approved school leads to a Study Permit. The school is checked against the canada.ca/dli-list. The Letter of Acceptance is mandatory in the application.
  2. GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) InvestmentFollowing the 2024 IRCC change, a CAD $20,635 GIC investment is mandatory (doubled from the previous CAD $10K). Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC, ICICI and SBI Canada offer GICs. CAD $2,000 is received on first arrival, and the remainder is paid in monthly instalments over 12 months.
  3. Study Permit Application (IRCC)Online application via canada.ca/study-permit. Fee CAD $150 + Biometrics CAD $85. The average processing time for applications from Türkiye is 4-8 weeks. Documents: letter of acceptance + GIC certificate + passport + CV + letter of intent (Statement of Purpose).
  4. Biometrics + Medical ExamThe VFS Global office (Ankara, Istanbul) takes fingerprints + photo. In some cases IRCC may request a medical exam (panel physician) — the annual list is on canada.ca. Results come 2-4 weeks after the application.
  5. Entry to Canada + Study Permit ActivationAt the border, a CBSA officer activates the Study Permit. The province-based health insurance application (OHIP Ontario, MSP British Columbia, RAMQ Quebec) is made in the first week — there is a 3-month waiting period, and private insurance (guard.me, Manulife) is mandatory for that period.
