University of Bergen

The University of Bergen (UiB) is mainly a city university. Its main campus is woven into the urban landscape of Bergen, Norway's second-largest city. The facilities are spread through the city center rather than set apart on an isolated or rural campus. That keeps students and faculty close to the cultural and social life of Bergen.

The central campus is in the Nygårdshøyden district. Historic and modern buildings stand side by side there, housing faculties such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, and Psychology. The same area holds the university's main administration, the University Library, and various academic support services.

From there you have easy access to public transportation, cafes, museums, and parks. The result is a lively, accessible environment for students. Beyond Nygårdshøyden, UiB runs several specialized campuses and facilities.

The Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry sit in the Haukeland University Hospital area. That area holds state-of-the-art laboratories, teaching hospitals, and research centers, and it fosters collaboration between academia and clinical practice.

The Marine Research facilities are at the Marineholmen campus, part of the Bergen Science City, which is home to important institutes such as the Institute of Marine Research and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

Student life at the University of Bergen (UiB) is lively and culturally rich. You will find a wide range of ways to take part in academic, social, and extracurricular activities. The university is home to a large number of student organizations and clubs. Their interests are diverse, and include academic fields, politics, volunteering, performing arts, and international relations.

The Bergen Student Society (Studentersamfunnet i Bergen) is one of the oldest and most influential student organizations in Norway. It hosts debates, concerts, and cultural events that are open to all students. The Student Parliament (Studentparlamentet) plays a vital role in representing student interests and promoting democratic participation within the university.

UiB also has a strong tradition of student journalism, with publications such as Studvest, a student newspaper covering campus and city life. Sports and student traditions are an important part of the social experience at UiB. The university does not have its own sports facilities, but you can join student-run sports clubs such as BSI (Bergen Studentidrettslag). BSI offers a wide range of sports including soccer, volleyball, climbing, and martial arts.

UiB is also known for its part in Bergen's cultural life. Students often attend many of the city's festivals, including the Bergen International Festival and the Nattjazz Festival.

One of the most prominent annual events at the university is Immigrant Days (Flerkulturelle dager). It celebrates cultural diversity through performances, lectures, and food. Student-organized events such as themed parties, film screenings, and quiz nights also help build a sense of community among students.
