IB Diploma vs A-Level

Comparison

IB or A-Level? Which High School Diploma Is Preferred?

Quick Summary (TL;DR)

The IB Diploma (6 subjects + TOK + EE + CAS, max 45 points) and A-Level (usually 3-4 subjects, A*-E grading) are two popular international high school programs. The IB is broad and interdisciplinary — you take required subjects across science, language and the arts. A-Level is focused — you study just 3-4 subjects in depth. US universities lean slightly toward the IB, while UK universities (especially the Russell Group) lean toward A-Level, but both are accepted worldwide.

Which One Is Right for You?

IB Diploma is right for you if

Broad and interdisciplinary

  • You are interested in more than one field (engineering + social science + arts)
  • You enjoy interdisciplinary thinking
  • Your target is US universities (Harvard, Stanford, MIT)
  • You are planning a writing- and research-focused academic career
  • Leadership + social responsibility projects appeal to you

A-Level is right for you if

In-depth 3-4 subjects

  • It is clear which field you'll pursue (e.g. medicine, engineering, law)
  • Studying 3-4 subjects in depth is more productive for you
  • You are targeting UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE)
  • You are used to exam-focused study
  • You want a lighter course load

Which is harder?

The IB and A-Level can't be compared on difficulty — they are hard in different ways. An IB student learns time management by juggling 6 subjects + a 4000-word essay + extra coursework. An A-Level student covers 3-4 subjects in depth, through full understanding rather than memorization. Students often score lower on the IB because it is far broader than a standard national curriculum.

Which is more common internationally?

IB: offered by selective private schools and international schools worldwide. A-Level: offered by institutions registered with Cambridge International, as well as dedicated preparation centers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study abroad without the IB or A-Level?
Yes — with a national high school diploma you can go directly or via a Foundation year to some countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Canada). However, for the world's Top 50 universities the IB or A-Level provides a very strong advantage.
Is it possible to do both?
Practically impossible — each is a 2-year full-time program. Choose one program and focus.
How is it different from the AP?
The AP (Advanced Placement) is a single-subject exam, not a full program. The IB and A-Level are comprehensive diploma programs. You can take the AP in parallel at your high school.
