GMAT Focus vs GRE General

Comparison

GMAT or GRE? Which Exam Should I Take for an MBA?

Quick Summary (TL;DR)

The GMAT Focus Edition (new 2024 format, 200-805 points, MBA-focused) and the GRE General Test (260-340 + AWA, broadly used) are two major graduate admissions exams. Most MBA programs (including the M7) accept both. The GMAT tests business/management reasoning + a Data Insights section; the GRE is general academic (verbal + quant). If you are strong in quant, the GMAT; if you are strong in verbal, the GRE.

Which One Is Right for You?

GMAT Focus is right for you if

The MBA standard

  • You are applying only to MBA programs
  • You are strong in quantitative + business reasoning
  • The Data Insights section appeals to you
  • You are targeting M7 / Top 10 MBAs (the GMAT is traditionally preferred)

GRE General is right for you if

General academic

  • You are considering an MBA + other master's degrees (MS, MA, PhD)
  • Strong verbal, broad vocabulary
  • You are uncomfortable without a calculator
  • Your budget is more limited ($55 cheaper)
  • You are weighing it as an additional option to the GMAT

Do MBA programs really accept both equally?

Data from most schools: at Stanford GSB in 2023, 35% of admitted students took the GRE and 65% the GMAT. Wharton: 30% GRE / 70% GMAT. Overall the GMAT is still the MBA standard, but the GRE gains acceptance every year.

On which exam is it easier to score high?

It depends on your profile. Many people who struggle with the GMAT score more comfortably on the GRE because: (1) it has a calculator, (2) the verbal is vocabulary-focused (memorizable), and (3) the AWA is shorter. However, if you are strong at data interpretation, you may do better on the GMAT.

No — there is no disadvantage at Top 10 MBA programs. In fact, schools like MIT Sloan, Yale SOM and Berkeley Haas openly recommend the GRE.
Can I take both and submit the higher one?
Yes, most students try both 2-3 months apart and add the highest score to their MBA application.
