The Goethe-Zertifikat is a series of German language proficiency tests prepared and administered by the Goethe-Institut. The Goethe-Institut is a German cultural association founded in 1951. It operates about 160 institutes worldwide and promotes German language learning, international cultural exchange and interaction. The Goethe-Zertifikat is recognized in many countries around the world. Employers and educational institutions often use it to assess German language proficiency.

What Is the Goethe-Zertifikat Used For?

The Goethe-Zertifikat is used to assess and certify German language skills in professions where spoken and/or written communication plays a major role. These include tour guiding, customer service, translation and interpreting, and work as a pilot or cabin crew member. It also serves as proof of German proficiency in applications to higher education institutions such as universities, technical universities, university colleges and vocational colleges.

More generally, it is used to determine what level a person's German proficiency is at. To learn more about universities in Germany and use all of our site's features for free, you can sign up right away. Some higher education institutions may, at their own discretion, ask for proficiency exams such as DSH or TestDaF. Even so, the Goethe-Zertifikat is recognized by many educational institutions worldwide.

What Are the Goethe-Zertifikat Proficiency Levels?

The Goethe-Zertifikat proficiency levels are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is an assessment and reference system set for the languages spoken across Europe.

Structure and Content of the Goethe-Zertifikat Exam

Like many language proficiency exams, the Goethe-Zertifikat measures test takers' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Reading

In the reading section, test takers read excerpts taken from reference books, interviews, reviews and/or reports. They then complete various exercises on these texts (e.g. summarizing some sections of the texts). In this way, the reading test assesses whether test takers can handle the longer, more extensive texts they may meet in real life. Test takers have 70 minutes to complete this section.

Writing

In the writing section, test takers receive various pieces of information about a topic in diagram form. They are asked to write a well-structured, detailed text. Test takers are given 80 minutes for this part of the exam.

Listening

In the listening section, test takers listen to discussions, phone conversations, interviews or radio news. They take notes on what they hear and categorize the statements they heard. Test takers have about 40 minutes to complete the listening section.

Speaking

In the first part of the speaking section, test takers express their views on a short text. They then join a discussion with an assigned speaking partner. Together they reach a joint decision on a set topic or find a solution to a problem. This part of the exam takes 10 to 15 minutes.

How Long Is the Goethe-Zertifikat Valid?

Like TestDaF and DSH, the Goethe-Zertifikat does not expire. Once you pass the test, the certificate stays valid indefinitely. Even so, some universities follow their own practices and regulations. If there is a large gap between the test date and the current date, they may ask you to retake the exam.

How to Prepare for the Goethe-Zertifikat

Exam preparation can be a hard process for people who know no German at all. The same goes for those whose German level is below B2 on the CEFR. Preparing properly for the exam means using quality, official preparation materials, attending German courses, taking practice tests and getting used to an unconventional exam format.
