Admission Requirements For International Students

Undergraduate

Prospective international students who wish to apply to undergraduate programs offered by Technical University of Munich must meet the admission requirements set out below.

  • A Recognized Secondary School Leaving Certificate
    or
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
    or
  • European Baccalaureate Diploma
    or
  • GCE A-Level or International Advanced Level
    otherwise
  • If a student have a High School Diploma from a private school with accreditation from the USA;
    • Then German authorities must first determine if a student’s certificates fulfill the requirements for High School diplomas from the USA. If these requirements are not fulfilled, then German authorities will evaluate if the student has successfully completed any years of study at a university.
  • If a student has successfully completed one year of a bachelor‘s degree programme at a recognised university;
    • Then the student qualifies to apply for the Studienkolleg (preparatory course) in Germany. Students may select a preparatory course in the same subject-area as their previous academic studies.
  • If a student has successfully completed two years of a bachelor‘s degree programme at a recognised university; 
    • Then the student qualifies to apply for a bachelor‘s degree in Germany. Students may select a subject in the same subject-area as your previous academic studies.

Please note that TUM requires proof of proficiency in the language of instruction for the chosen program. For programs taught in German, applicants typically need to present a TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe-Institut certificate. For English-taught programs, a TOEFL or IELTS score is usually required. The specific language requirements can vary by program.

Graduate

 Prospective international students who wish to apply to graduate programs offered by Technical University of Munich must meet the admission requirements set out below.

  • Bachelor's Degree Diploma
  • High Grade Point Average
  • Official transcripts of the courses taken by the applicant during college/university education
  • Work experience may be required for certain programs
  • Certificate in English Proficiency for programs taught in English
    • IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English Tests (C1 advanced or C2 proficiency)
  • Certificate in German Proficiency for programs taught in German
    • TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-Zertifikat

Certificates of a general higher education qualification allow students to apply to all programs at universities and (subject-specific) colleges in all the German states. The general higher education entrance qualifications include the following certificates:

  • Secondary school-leaving certificate (Gymnasium)
  • Evening university prep school certificate (Abendgymnasium)
  • Certificate of comprehensive secondary/upper secondary school
  • Certificate from institutes offering a university entrance qualification (Kolleg)
  • Certificate of having passed the final examination of a (technical) university degree program with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters

Graduate

  • Bachelor's Degree Diploma
  • High Grade Point Average
  • Official transcripts of the courses taken by the applicant during college/university education
  • Work experience may be required for certain programs
  • GRE/GMAT exam score may be required in accordance with the specific admission requirements of certain programs.
  • In addition, Technical University of Munich may require applicants to sit various exams and obtain a sufficient score in line with the admission requirements specific to the program applicant is applying to.
