Motivation Letter Samples

An overseas university acceptance letter is a personal letter explaining why a student is seeking admission to the overseas university they are applying to, their purpose of study, career goals, and interests. This letter plays an important role in the university application process and allows students to share their academic and professional experiences, motivations, and goals.

The acceptance letter, also known as a letter of intent, provides an opportunity for students to introduce themselves to the university they are applying to and explain why they have chosen that university, their interests, and why they want to study in a particular program. This letter emphasizes the student's personality, passions, and goals, allowing them to show aspects of themselves that cannot be expressed through grades and test scores alone.

The following topics are usually addressed in the acceptance letter:

  • Self-introduction: First name, last name, program applied to, and other personal information
  • Academic Background: Previous educational experiences, GPAs, and academic achievements
  • Career Goals: The student's interests and long-term career goals
  • Reasons for Applying to the University and Program: Explanations about why the university and program are preferred, their features, and their opportunities.
  • Motivation: Motivating factors for why the student wants to study this program and what contributions it will make
  • Academic and Professional Experiences: Relevant internships, research, projects, or other academic and professional experiences
  • Interests and Research Topics: The student's topics of interest and potential research areas
  • Conclusion and Acknowledgments: Concluding the letter and thanking the reader

The admission letter offers students the chance to leave a positive impression on the admissions committee by explaining how they fit in personally and academically with the university they are applying to and why they are applying. Therefore, writing a carefully thought-out, authentic, and coherent letter of intent can help strengthen the application.

Things to Consider When Writing a Letter of Intent

There are some important things to consider when writing a letter of intent to the university. These important tips will help you make your letter of intent more effective. When the content of your letter is open and honest about your personal experiences, goals, and interests, your application is more likely to be positively affected. Here are some things to consider when writing a letter of intent:

  • Be Personal and original. Write your letter in your own voice and make sure it stands out from other applicants. Authenticity helps readers get to know you better and remember your application.
  • Explain Aims and Objectives: In your letter, clearly state why you have chosen that university and program and your purpose of study. Emphasize how it aligns with your academic and career goals.
  • Show Your Passions and Interests: Highlight your interests, motivations, and special talents in your field. This gives you a unique perspective.
  • Share Your Previous Experiences: Talk about your academic or professional experiences. Describe your achievements and how these experiences will benefit you.
  • Describe your Education and Career Plan: Explain what you want to do after your education and how you want to contribute in this field.
  • Pay Attention to Language and Spelling: Avoid language and spelling mistakes. Make sure your letter is written fluently and neatly.
  • Stay Limited: Try to keep your letter of intent as short and concise as possible. It should usually be 1–2 pages long.
  • Be Positive and sincere. Write your letter in positive language and phrase it in a sincere manner. Avoid negative or negative statements.
  • Learn about the program you are applying for: Get detailed information about the university and the program, and support your letter with this information. You will gain credibility regarding your motivations as a result of this.

How Should the Structure of an Acceptance Letter Look Like?

The structure of an acceptance letter to a university should generally include the following sections:

Beginning and Introductory Paragraph:

Academic Background and Experiences:

In this section, share your previous educational experiences, academic achievements, grade point averages, and if you have received any awards or honors. At the same time, highlight your previous educational experiences that played an important role in your university application.

Career Goals and Motivation:

Explain how your university education and the program you are applying to will benefit you and support your career goals. State what you want to do after your studies and why you want to pursue this field.

Subjects and Interests:

Indicate your interests and areas of specialization to support why you are applying to university. Describe which courses or subjects are of particular interest to you and why you want to study in that area.

Why You Are Applying to the University and Program:

In this section, state your reasons for choosing the university and program you are applying to. You can mention the prestige of the university, academic staff, laboratory facilities, or research opportunities.

Conclusion and Acknowledgments:

End your letter on a positive note and thank the reader. If given the opportunity, express that you look forward to having your application considered.

Remember that the acceptance letter is an important opportunity to present a perspective on your academic and professional experiences, passions, and goals. Take care to write your letter carefully and make sure that it follows the format and length required by the university you are applying to.

University of Southern California

Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism

Letter of Motivation:

Applicant for September 20XX admission to the Master’s in Communication program

Dear ___________,

I am currently completing my bachelor’s degree in North American Studies with a minor in Media Communications at Bilkent University, Turkey. Since my focus has increasingly centered on communications, I would like to continue my studies in a graduate communications program in the United States.

After considerable research, I am sure that the Annenberg School, with its international reputation for excellence and worldwide network of alumni, is the best fit for my interests and future career. Your faculty expertise in new and social media is especially important to me. Professors at the Annenberg School have written a significant portion of the literature I have read on the subject. I hope to work in corporate communications for an international company. Although organizations are beginning to understand the increasing impact of new and social media, real expertise in the area is just developing.

What I can contribute to the program, in addition to my great enthusiasm for the field, is an international perspective from my studies in Turkey as well as varied communication internships in London, Montreal, and Munich. I worked as an intern for three months in the London offices of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide as an assistant to the social media team, designing and implementing social media programs for international clients. Two months at Weber-Shandwick Communications in Montreal, working in their corporate communications group, gave me hands-on experience and an increased understanding of the complexities of corporate communications in a digital world. In my internship in the communications department of HypoVereinsbank in Munich, I was able to help create internal communications for employees during a transition period when the bank changed from a locally owned enterprise to a subsidiary of an international company.

I am an outgoing person and an enthusiastic participant in sports such as soccer, tennis, and mountain biking. I have coached a youth soccer team in my hometown near Munich for the past five years. After my graduation in June, I plan to take a ‘gap year’ that will include a solo backpacking trip through Southeast Asia and nine months as a volunteer English teacher at a refugee center in Thailand. I appreciate you considering my application, and I would be honored to be part of your Master’s in Communication program in September 20XX. I understand that you will attract the best candidates in the field, and I am confident that I would flourish in that environment. Working and sharing with other highly motivated students would be a joy. The recommendation letters you requested have been sent directly to you. Please let me know if you would like any additional information.

Sincerely,
