Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University is a prestigious private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland. The university was established in 1876, and it was given its name in honor of Johns Hopkins, an American businessman and philanthropist who was the institution's first donor. His contribution of $7 million to the institution was, at the time, the greatest charitable gift that had ever been given in the history of the United States up to that date. The university was designed from the beginning as a research establishment, and it was modeled after the renowned research universities that are located in Germany.

The university's campuses are located in Maryland and Washington, District of Columbia, and it has foreign locations in Italy, China, and Singapore. The institution is structured into 10 different departments. On the Homewood campus, which is located in the Charles Village district of Baltimore, are the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. The health science degree programs at Johns Hopkins University are very well-known and respected. The Johns Hopkins Hospital, which was also created by Johns Hopkins, is widely regarded as one of the finest medical facilities in both the United States and the rest of the world. The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is widely regarded as a pioneer in both the field of biomedical research and clinical treatment. Additionally held in very high esteem is the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

In addition, the institution offers highly regarded degrees in a wide variety of other areas, such as engineering, creative writing, and international relations, amongst others. The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has campuses in both Bologna, Italy and Nanjing, China in addition to its main location in Washington, District of Columbia. Moreover, Johns Hopkins University is frequently listed among the most prestigious universities in the world and 39 people who have been awarded the Nobel Prize have been affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. The faculty and alumni of Johns Hopkins University have made major contributions to the progress of knowledge. These contributions include the discovery of restriction enzymes, further development of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and the pioneering of the "blue baby" procedure, among a great number of other accomplishments.
